Bee Awesome is a free educational programme for schools and community groups. Learn about Bees from building a hive, rearing a queen, to harvesting honey.
We’re a social enterprise passionate about bees and the environment. We want to teach the tamariki of Waitaha about the importance of biodiversity/ He rerenga rauropi, food security/ He kai whakahaumaru & sustainability/ He whakaukatanga (environmental & financial).
We’ve created some fun, engaging lessons and resources to get our kids outside and learning first-hand why bees are so important to our ecosystems. We offer a hive at your school and a six-lesson programme that follows the bee season. Check out some of our resources here – TEACHING NOTES and PREPARATION.
1 A) What do we need to do? B) What kind of bee is that?
2) How does the beehive work?
3) Why should we care about bees?
4) What if there were no bees?
5) Show me the Honey, honey!
Alternatively, we can do a one-off lesson that could match your specific lesson aims or a general intro to bees. We have a demo hive, equipment and beekeeper suits that the students could try on.
